Function Disguised By Form was the first piece I made during my studies at Design Centre, Enmore. We were tasked with creating a toast rack using cold connections only. This lead to a lot of experimentation and ideas, with Function Disguised By Form, being the final result.
The main body of the toast rack, which is made up of three pieces on aluminium, was designed to disguise the joins when slotted together. When separated they needed to have some integrity as individual strong forms that still served the function of holding toast. The oak base, ties the piece together and gives it a solid grounding as well as providing a solidity to an other size hollow frame.
It was a challenging first project, but the restrictions in a strange way actually freed up my thinking.
